“An easy to read chapter book that can be enjoyed by children of all ages… an extraordinary world full of memorable characters and dangerous villains… the narrative follows the blossoming of a friendship, while exploring the strengths of each of the two main protagonists. Weaving in morales about important ideals like loyalty, bravery, and what it means to be a good friend, the story shows younger readers how important it is to do the right thing, no matter the costs. With rich descriptions, realistic dialogue, and settings you feel as if you are truly immersed within, this is the start to a promising new fantasy series…” – Red City Review
“Ms. Richardson has written an adorable story filled with magical creatures and an action-filled plot that kept me captivated throughout. With her ability to provide the reader with vibrant imagery and a story line that flowed with ease, truly demonstrates what an incredible story teller Ms. Richardson is. I found myself deeply engaged in this story, not wanting to put it down even for a second! I hope that the author continues this series, as I enjoy the adventures and want to read more.” – Tamara B.

Get More Reviews for Your Book by Connecting with Readers on BookTube

The world of publishing has changed significantly in just the past few years, and the Internet has played a major role. With the rise of self-publishing, both new and established authors are wondering just how they fit into this brave new world.
On the marketing front, there are a number of excellent outlets to help self-published authors and new writers get the exposure they need, but none is as interesting, or as potentially powerful, as BookTube. The beauty of BookTube is that it allows authors to connect with real readers. Instead of being filtered through armies of professional reviewers, authors can communicate directly with their target audience.
Dedicated readers watch enthusiastic BookTubers talk about their favorite new finds, share what they liked, and did not like, about the latest books they read and share books they think their fellow readers would like. They’ll post book haul videos, their TBR, reviews of works by new and established indie authors and more. BookTubers tend to have a large following of ‘subscribers’ who regularly watch their videos, so having your book mentioned can be great exposure.
By connecting with readers on YouTube, self-published authors are able to garner real, genuine, honest reviews. Since there is no puffery or hidden agenda, these types of reviews are more credible, especially to potential buyers.
If you want to join the BookTube world, it is easy to get started. With hundreds of thousands of BookTubers currently on YouTube, there is no shortage of reviewers to choose from. Search for readers you think would enjoy your work. Reach out and offer them a complimentary copy of your book, then eagerly await your review. Keep in mind that most BookTubers prefer paperbacks, since they are easier to feature in their videos.
If the BookTubers you reach out to like your book, they will create a video review and share it on their YouTube channel, sharing your work with not only fellow authors but hundreds of thousands of potential readers as well. This kind of guerilla marketing is a vital part of writing today, and it can pay off big in the long run. For quality works, the viral nature of the Internet in general, and the BookTube site in particular, can help you take it from there. Whether you write historical fiction, romance, science fiction, biographies or something else, BookTube is a great way to gain exposure, market your work and get your name out there. Plus the videos are so fun to watch!

Self-Publishing on Amazon: Categories & Keywords

AmazonWhen publishing your book on Amazon, it’s important to choose your categories and keywords carefully.
Take into consideration not only what best describes your books but also what will maximize the chances that a reader who is browsing through the Kindle store will find your books,” says Author M. Louise Locke.
The categories and keywords that you select can have a big impact on visibility and sales. When you upload your book into KDP, they only give you the more general categories to choose from. There are secret categories are not selectable in the KDP dashboard… For this reason, they have lower competition than the available ones on the Amazon dashboard. Here’s an article that explains it well:
By carefully choosing your category, you make it much more likely that a reader will find your book. The smaller the category, the less competition and more of a chance to be found by a potential reader. When someone is browsing for a book on Amazon, each time they go one step further down the hierarchical categories, there are fewer books to browse. You want to choose one of these lower competition categories.
In Let’s Get Visible, David Gaughran says::
There are a huge number of books in Fiction (over 1,000,000). Choosing Fiction as a category is a waste because: electing a subcategory of Fiction will get you into the Fiction category as well. Even if you drill down several levels to choose something like Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Mystery, Thriller & Suspense > Thrillers > Political, your book will still show in all of the top-level categories above the one you have chosen (i.e. Fiction; Mystery, Thriller & Suspense; Thrillers). In other words, when you pick something more specific like that, you are multiplying your potential visibility opportunities rather than restricting them. Also, where possible, it is advantageous to opt for two distinct categories to maximize visibility, rather than choosing two categories that are both roots of the same top-level category.
Mystery & Thrillers is one of the most competitive categories in the Kindle Store, second only to Romance. Appearing on any Mystery & Thrillers list is a serious challenge that requires impressive sales—something that might be beyond most writers until they have several titles out and have built a dedicated following. However, with a little poking around in the subcategories, you can identify some that don’t need very many sales at all. Technothriller is one, and Mystery > Series is another. Neither is selectable from the KDP interface, so there aren’t many books in either category. You might be wondering how to get into these categories if you can’t select them from the KDP dashboard. It’s pretty simple. Email KDP through the dashboard with the full path of the category you wish to appear in (e.g. Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Mystery & Thrillers > Mystery > Series). If you get a confusing or incorrect response, you must persist. It may take multiple exchanges, but you will get it resolved eventually—and it’s worth it.
It can be helpful to switch up your category every so often – in order to reach new potential readers. Changing categories can introduce your work to a whole new group of readers. Identify a number of alternative categories for your book, so that you have options to try.
Here is the full list of categories you can choose from:

The International Family Guide to US University Admissions

The International Family Guide to US University AdmissionsWritten by an experienced international educator and counselor, The International Family Guide to US University Admissions is an indispensable resource for international families and students applying for admission to US universities.
“This is the first and only guide dedicated to the international applicant and family,” says Jennifer Ann Aquino. “I was inspired by the countless times I was asked, ‘How do I start the process and what do I need to do?’. I wrote this book based on exactly what I cover with my own students, all international, all different, all unique and all finding success at university.”
With the help of this book, you’ll discover how to make sense of the US admissions system – from start to finish:
• Every action step (Milestone) the student & family must take in the process is covered.  Insider tips, comments and alerts accompany each. All Milestones incorporate worksheets and reasoning for why they need to be done, when, and how each will affect the application.
• Every chapter begins with a Case Study of an actual student of mine. Read feedback and advice from both students and parents on specific Milestones throughout the guide – giving you the most realistic picture of how the process works, how to manage it, and how to succeed.
• Learn what type of universities are best for you and how to determine what your fit truly is. With thousands of schools to pick from, it’s important to first figure out who you are and what you want, your interests and passions.
• Learn what colleges want, what they care about, and what will make your application stronger (or weaker) by staying true to yourself and the fit between you and the university. A full Writing Handbook is included that covers how to write your own powerful, meaningful, and unique essays staying true-to-self and standing out to admissions.
Whether you’re an international student living outside of the US or an ex-pat living abroad, you’ll find answers to all of your questions – all in one place.

Praise for The International Family Guide to US University Admissions:
“The US University or ‘college’ application process is complex, with thousands of universities to choose from, each asking for different requirements – it is lengthy and often very stressful. As an international educator, administrator, and someone with extensive valuable international experience, Jennifer Aquino truly becomes our Northern Light and our guide during this wearing process… in my opinion the most important part of this book is the numerous Case Studies, real stories that we can learn from. Having graduated thousands of students and closely experienced the US University application process with them, I strongly recommend this book to every parent, student, college counselor and school. This is an invaluable gem that everyone should read and every library should get ahold of.” – Cenk Eyüboğlu, Vice-Chairman of the Board, Eyüboğlu Educational Institutions, İstanbul, Turkey; graduate of Harvard University Graduate School of Education, Tufts University and Bentley University
“Our three boys went through the American university application system and I still find it daunting. Is it because we are foreigners? What are SAT’s and ACT’s? How do they differ and how do I prepare my kids for them? Do all universities ask for these standardized tests? Why do some universities ask for extra essays? What is Liberal Arts?  What does it mean to apply as ‘undeclared’? What documents do I have to provide the universities? Where do I get all the paperwork for the visas done? Deadlines? The university of what? Where is that? Will my child ‘fit in’ being a foreigner? And most of all, what will our kids gain by attending an American university that other academic institutions around the world can’t offer? Jennifer answered all these questions while implementing the only approach that works, following the timeline. She got to know my boys and empowered them to find the right fit and she does the same for all the users of this book – parents and students alike. It is a must-have for any parent and student going through this process.” – Brigitte Roulet, Parent, Switzerland
“Choosing the right university to attend is arguably one of life’s greatest decisions. Jennifer Aquino’s book is an insider’s guide, helping international students and their families find the right institution by navigating the complex and often overwhelming admissions process. As an internationally recognized expert in US university admissions, Jennifer shares critical information, insights, tips, tools and Case Studies that make the application process easier. As a former international student myself, who applied to and graduated from a university in the US, and given my role as Dean of International Education, I understand well the value this book provides to international students. It is an important resource and reference for anyone interested in attending a college or university in the US.” – Warren Jaferian, Dean, International Education, Endicott College
“Throughout my career, I have felt enormous empathy for applicants and their families who just had no idea how competitive college admission is in the US… Jennifer finally offers international families a guide that explains US college admissions and gives clear guidance through each step of the process. She identifies key Milestones and provides clever Worksheets and a Writing Handbook that will help the user to create a highly personalized and strong application for the student’s best-fit universities. The Case Studies and strategic Parent Advice and Student Advice make this book a must for any US-bound student!” – Ellen M. Sullivan, former Admissions Officer, Harvard College; Executive Director of International Advancement, Boston College
“I have been helping students with their university planning and applications for more than 20 years, as a high school counselor in international high schools and as an independent university advisor. During each of those 20+ years, I have looked for a comprehensive, intelligent, and ethical guide to help families understand this process and how to approach it, and that I could feel comfortable recommending. This book is all of that. I will use it myself, and will ask each of the families I work with to purchase one for our work together.” – Mark Gathercole, Education Advisor and Consultant, Independent University Advising; Certified Educational Professional (CEP)

The Basics Of Book Publicity

booksPR is one of the biggest factors in determining the success of an author. However, it is also one of the most difficult things for an author to get a handle on. As an author, you specialize in writing, whereas a publicist specializes in promotion. You can try doing it yourself, but if you don’t have any PR experience, your time is limited, or you don’t feel comfortable promoting yourself, your best bet may be to hire a publicist. They know what they are doing and already have the established relationships and contacts in the book world.
In order to sell more books, people need to be able to find it. In order for them to find your book, you need to have a presence.  Here are a few simple ways to promote your book:
Readers are more inclined to purchase your book if they see positive reviews. Note that these reviews don’t need to be from professional critics – Amazon customers and bloggers can have just as big of an impact.
The best way to get reviews for your book is to research online for reviewers that cover your genre. Shoot them an email to introduce yourself and offer them a free copy of your book. It is important to get your book in front of as many reviewers as possible. The more reviewers you pitch, the better! Keep in mind that reviewers love to receive a copy of the book before it’s released. They also tend to prefer paperbacks, over ebooks. And when mailing copies of your book out, it’s always nice to add a little personalized note.
It takes time for a reviewer to receive your book, read it, and publish a review. A lot of times they have other books on their list to read first, but be patient, because the more reviews you have, the more sales you’ll see.
Social Media
In the Internet age, websites such as Facebook and Twitter have become a major source of publicity for authors. These websites are free to use and allow you to communicate with people you might not be able to reach in other ways. To get the most out of social media, you will need to regularly engage your potential fan base with tweets and Facebook posts. It is important to not be overly self-promotional though. Not every post needs to mention your book. Instead, you could share articles, images, or quotes that are on topics related to your book. For example, if your book is about healthy eating, you could share a new recipe or a recent article the NY Times did on juicing. Social networking is easy to do yourself, and fun, once you get the hang of it.
Write a Press Release
To get any kind of traction in traditional media, you’ll need to write up a press release. In short, a press release details why you and your book are interesting. The press release should be short – no more than a page – and include tidbits of information that could be used in a feature article about you. Sometimes, traditional media will opt to simply print the press release. If you’re lucky and you attract enough attention, you may find yourself the subject of a feature piece, which is excellent publicity for an author. Start by mailing a copy of the press release, along with a copy of your book, to the editor at your local newspaper and/or the producer at your local TV station. Once you’ve reached out to your local media outlets, then you can expand your reach to other magazines or news sites that may be a good fit to cover your book.
Get Out There
In the end, the biggest determining factor in how much publicity you’ll get is the amount of stuff you put out there. The more tweets, blog posts, press releases, and reviews you have, the more traction you’re likely to obtain. So if you do decide to hire a publicist, don’t just sit back and relax. The more you contribute, the better your results will be.

7 Ways to Promote Your Book

bookstoreThe desire to write a book is a common one, but the rise of the eBook format means it is now easier than ever to publish one. As more people get used to reading on their Kindle, there is the opportunity to reach an eager audience overnight. Even if the idea of writing a book still seems inconceivable, the format lends itself to all manner of styles, including picture books, reference books, children’s books, and many other categories that can even be outsourced. Standing out from the crowd, however, still remains a problem, but the following methods can all be used to help your book find an audience.
Promotional Sites
There are many sites you can use to promote a Kindle book. Some sites are tailored towards free books, while others focus on cheap deals. The best sites typically offer better placements if you pay for inclusions, but you can still find many that do not charge. A few of the higher profile sites include Book Bub, Ereader News Today, Buck Books, and Pixel of Ink, but there are numerous alternatives you can try. Results are likely to vary, so try to help your book stand out with a review or featured promotion.
Kindle Countdown Deal
A Kindle Countdown Deal lets you offer discounted prices for select periods of time. Your product page will display the regular price, the discount price, and a timer showing when the price will rise. You can also set price increments, so the cost gradually increases over a selected time period. Scarcity is a powerful marketing tool, with a countdown timer significantly raising the desire to buy. Amazon also have a dedicated Countdown page, allowing you to be seen by people searching for good deals.
Facebook Advertising
While it might appear risky paying for advertising on a low-cost product, there are still cheap clicks to be found on Facebook. It might be difficult to make any serious profit, but paid advertising can increase your position within the Amazon searches, help you onto a category bestseller list, and earn you some important reviews. Facebook offers a lot of demographic targeting, so you can also reach your ideal customers effectively.
SEO can be a long and difficult process, but there is an advantage to being on the Amazon platform. Authority sites can rank naturally for many different terms, with less promotion required due to the power of the platform. If you use a relevant title and description, some limited backlinking can help you achieve a prime search position. Ranking can be difficult and precarious for a new site, but the strength of Amazon means you don’t have to be so cautious with your search optimization efforts.
Free Bonus with Content Locker
A recommendation from a reader is an excellent way to make sales and increase conversions. Recommendations can be hard to get, so you need to make the process as enticing as possible. Offer a free bonus – a supplementary guide or additional chapter – at the beginning and end of the book. If a reader visits your bonus page, use a content locker tool to protect the gift. The reader will have to like your book on a social network before the bonus is unlocked. This method will increase social shares, offer more visibility, and provide something worthwhile for the reader.
Request Reviews
Selling Kindle books is far more difficult when you don’t have reviews. Even a single positive review will add credibility, with a star rating appearing by your title. Most readers won’t be inclined to leave a review, so you need to remind them. Readers will be reminded at the end of the book and by email, but you can go further with social media. Start a Facebook group, interact on Twitter, and speak to the audiences on sites like Good Reads. These platforms help develop relationships, leading to a greater likelihood of positive reviews.
Create a Print Version or Audiobook
Using the CreateSpace platform, it is fairly easy to self-publish a print version of your book. Having your book available in both ebook and print helps emphasize the legitimacy of the product, as well as boost sales. Potential customers will look for credibility before purchasing, with a print version helping to achieve this.
You may also want to consider creating an audio version of your book. Audible is a huge platform with thousands of potential customers looking for new audiobooks to buy. Having your book available in audio format it’s just one more way for you to generate more sales.
Each of these methods can help build some momentum for your book. One of the biggest issues writers face is making the first few sales, so you need to get past this initial hurdle. When you have gained some sales, received some positive reviews, and started social promotion, you should find the Amazon ranking system starts working in your favor. A good book can sell for many years, so now is the time to get creative.
